What is the Soul

By: Robert Helms

The Soul is the life force given to us by God. This could also be thought of as our spirit. The problem arises when we don't identify with our spirit. We don't see ourselves as a spirit. Instead we identify with our body and take on the identity of self. This causes selfishness. If we see ourselves as separate from everyone and everything else then the only thing left for us to identify with is “Self”. Every living creature has a soul. But it is only Man and Woman who can realize this Soul. The Human body is the only vessel in the Universe suitable for achieving enlightenment.. Enlightenment is when we stop identifying with the “self” and take on the identity of spirit. This is when we can see ourselves as part of something bigger than our “self”. This is when we can understand “unity” and “oneness” with all living creatures. That is the reason for our existence, to grow spiritually, to become better spirits and achieve enlightenment. Therefore, God has created the Universe as a ground where both good and evil can exist side by side and often in the same instance. This gives us the opportunity to grow spiritually. In the vastness of God's mercy he has made it our choice. We decide which way we want to perceive life.

This is where meditation is our biggest tool. Because in meditation we go inside to concentrate on our soal within leaving “self” behind. The mor we do this the less and less we identify with “self” and the mor and more we begin to perceive ourselves as a spirit. Meditation is our one tool for understanding the nature of our soul and achieving true enlightenment.
